Lino Scala
Lino Scala is the Honorary President of Club Italiani in Charlotte. About fifteen years ago, he created the Facebook page “Italiani in Charlotte,” born from a need he had noticed over the years: the Charlotte and Piedmont areas of North Carolina were home to many Italian companies, which drew people from all over Italy, but there was no place to compare notes, exchange information, and share everyday experiences of life in this part of the United States.
At the time, Facebook was the go-to place for anyone looking for practical information and answers. The first year was a constant flow of people looking for advice, contacts, and useful tips to find their way in a new reality. From the second year on, he began organizing monthly meetups and events together with a few friends, including the now-traditional Pizzata (pizza night), giving the group a new dimension: no longer just a virtual space, but an opportunity to meet and build real connections. Those gatherings gave rise to WhatsApp groups, friendships, and initiatives that kept growing over time.
Lino had always wanted to create a Club for Italians, and the project came to life one evening at dinner with Lele, when the conversation went from “I’d love to start a club for Italians” to “let’s do it.”
Today, that idea has become a nonprofit organization, a sort of Pro Loco (the Italian-style local community association) for Italians in Charlotte and the surrounding area, with the goal of keeping the Italian community alive, bringing people together, and helping everyone feel a little more at home.
